I look forward to meeting you and you child on August 16th. I hope your family has enjoyed a restful summer and you were able to take advantage of quality family time.
I enjoyed the summer with my two daughters, husband and a trip to Florida! This was our first time and we enjoyed the sun, tolerated the humidity and looked forward to entering air conditioning! We also brought home unwanted souvenirs which came in the form of bug bites! But we enjoy traveling, seeing new sites and visiting friends, so it was a terrific vacation.
For those of you trying to figure out who I am, here are a few details. I have been in the Encinitas Union School District for 14 years and all but one of those, at Capri. Prior to Encinitas, I taught overseas in a Department of Defense School. I love photography, to run, read and of course spend time with my family.
I hope that your child savors the last few days of vacation and I am excited to start the school year with him/her!

Hello Parents,
Our field trip last week to MOPA was terrific! The kids were asked to examine different photographers work, which was led by Mrs. Ward. Then the class was handed their disposable cameras and scavenger hunt sheets. After reading students reflections, many of the kids loved this chance to hunt for items that met specific photography elements. Thank you to our wonderful parent drivers and chaperones: Mrs. Benford, Mrs. Madden, Mrs. Patrick, Mrs. Samadani, Mrs. Steffan, and Mrs. Urcelay! We appreciate your help! It was a great day!
This week we will continue to work with geometry and finding the area of irregular shapes. Students will also learn mode, median and range. In Language Arts, we will be finishing up with the story “The Stranger” and reinforce the use of apostrophes.
As testing is nearing, we will continue to work through testing packets in order to reinforce good test taking strategies. The best way for you to support your child from now until testing time, is to make sure they are here at school (barring legitimate illness) and remind them to focus while at school!
Thank you for all your support!

Hello Parents!
A reminder that this Wednesday, April 28, is our field trip to the Musuem of Photographic Art. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to drive and chaperone. Currently we are still in need of drivers. So if you would be able to drive, please notify me ASAP and I will pass the paperwork along. The class is very excited for this trip!
Please be aware that we will begin testing the week of May 10. It is very important that your child be at school each day, on time and well rested. If there is an unavoidable appointment that your child must attend, it is best to schedule it for the afternoon so they do not miss any of their testing time.
As always, please call or email any questions you may have!

Thank you to all of those who have sent in field trip permission slips and money! If you have not sent these in, please do so as soon as possible.
This week our class will continue to work in Book Club groups. Each group must be finished reading their book by the end of this Friday and complete all required journal entries. As I travel from group to group it has been interesting to listen to the conversations students are engaged in and how motivated they are to complete their work. You should take the opportunity to ask your child about the book they are reading and what they have been doing with their group!
In math, we continue to work with geometry. Specifically, students will learn parts of a circle, identify 3 dimensional polyhedrons by proper names, and learn how to visually take a 2-dimensional shape and identify what it will become as a 3-dimensional polyhedron (nets).
I look forward to seeing many of you for your child’s conference this week. If you are unable to make your scheduled conference, please call the office as soon as possible to let me know.

Hello Parents,
Please look for many forms that will be coming home today! Conference time sheet, field trip info and parent letter should all be delivered to you by your child! It will be much appreciated that you read through everything carefully and return all pertinent forms!
Ask your child which book they will be starting this week in their Book Club! It took a few days to put everything in order and in that time students were asking everyday when they were starting their books. It’s terrific that there was so much anticipation.
Some important reminders:
*Next week is conference week so dismissal will be at 12:45 everyday
*Book Log forms will be due March 3
*Afternoon subject tests will be on March 4

It’s a busy week in our room this week! For starters, your child will be taking a second trimester test in writing, language arts and math. I will also be introducing book clubs in language arts and starting a new geometry unit in math.
Anyone come home on Friday that was excited about photography? Your child may have shared with you that Mrs. Ward was with us this last Friday to introduce a photography program. She will be with our class the next 4 weeks, following a program used by the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. Your child will learn about framing, point of view and be practicing with newly introduced concepts and then follow up with a writing piece. I also wrote for a mini-grant to the PTA to purchase ‘throw- away cameras’ and pay for film development to support the program, which they graciously accepted. We are very fortunate to have this opportunity!
Your child should have also brought home a conference appointment paper. Please complete the form as soon as possible so that I can try to schedule the most convenient time for you.

Hello Parents,
We hope you can attend the 4th grade Recorder Assembly this Thursday, January 28 at 8:30 in the Multi-Purpose room. You will be impressed by what you hear!
In the class this week, we will be in Chapters 24-26 in Island of the Blue Dolphins. Your child should be working on their brochure at home daily since they will have the remainder of the rough draft due on Friday.
We will also continue our work with adverbs and we will start a new spelling list on Monday but students will not have a test on the list until Feb. 5th. as I will be out of the class on Friday the 29th and Monday the 1st.
Please support your child in raising money for the Jog-a-thon, which is on February 5th. These funds support many programs that our students enjoy and are very enriching!
Thank you for your support!
